A long-standing boundary debate between Montague Township and Smiths Falls is back on the table.
Talks began in 2009 when Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs approved a restructuring order, shifting key properties—like the Ontario Provincial Police Southeast facility and the former Rideau Regional Centre—into Smiths Falls. The move came with agreements on boundary adjustments and revenue sharing.
By 2020, discussions had gained momentum, but pandemic delays stalled redevelopment plans for the Gallipeau Centre, a site seen as crucial in the town’s Official Plan.
Now, Smiths Falls officials are engaging with Montague leaders once again to update terms and attract private investment for institutional buildings and infrastructure.
Both sides see potential for economic growth and are exploring ways to finalize a deal that benefits everyone. Officials remain hopeful that a renewed agreement will pave the way for future development.
