A public meeting to present details of a proposed solar farm in Drummond/North Elsmsley, and to gather public feedback will be held on Feb 11th at the Perth Legion on Beckwith Street in Perth starting at 6 pm.
The proposed project by Compass Greenfield Development Inc. will combine solar power and agriculture in the township. The project, featuring up to 9.5 MW of solar energy, is set to participate in the IESO’s LT2 RFP bid in late 2025.Ontario is preparing for a sharp increase in electricity demand, which is expected to rise by 75% between 2025 and 2050.
Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) is securing additional energy resources. The Long-Term Request for Proposals (LT2 RFP) aims to add 2,000 MW of capacity, with contracts awarded by early 2026 and operations starting before 2030. Teh project in DN/E is one of them.
The initiative promises major investments and job creation while supporting Ontario’s growing energy needs. The project also allows sheep to graze under elevated solar panels, combining sustainability with clean energy production.
Not everyone in the area is thrilled about the idea and the meeting will give them the opportunity to be heard by DN/E Council before any decisions are made.
