A powerful winter storm is expected to hit eastern Lanark County Wednesday evening, bringing heavy snowfall and dangerous conditions.
Environment Canada has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Smiths Falls, Perth, and surrounding areas, warning of 20 to 40 cm of snow. Peak snowfall rates may exceed 5 cm per hour, creating poor visibility and hazardous travel. The storm is expected to taper off by Thursday afternoon.
Strong northeast winds gusting up to 50 km/h will cause blowing snow, further reducing visibility. Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel. Those who must travel should inform others of their plans and carry an emergency kit.
Public Safety Canada recommends having essentials like food, water, medication, a first-aid kit, and a flashlight on hand. More information on emergency preparedness is available at getprepared.gc.ca.
