The Mississippi Mills council’s committee has passed two motions that bring a battery energy storage system closer to approval at 6299 County Road 29. Compass Energy is applying to develop a 15-megawatt storage project on the site.
The first motion accepts the agreement for funding based on the system’s capacity, expected to bring in $16,478 annually. Compass has also pledged to provide fire-fighting training, equipment updates, and adequate insurance.
The second motion amends the property’s zoning to allow the battery system.
The fire chief expressed satisfaction with Compass’s provisions for fire safety. However, full council approval and authorization from the Independent Electricity System Operator are still required before the project can move forward. Mayor Christa Lowry declared a conflict of interest during the meeting
