Lanark Highlands council is looking into renovating the aging arena.
Staff are applying for support through the Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund, which would cover half of the projected $7.25 million price tag for the arena rehab and the second story addition.
That would leave the township on the hook for about $3.625 million, but councilor Jeannie Kelso believes the community would show their support.
Councillor Steve Roberts has concerns around council having to fund the other half.
Roberts suggested a deferral until the township has a better grip on their finances. He was the lone councillor to vote against pursuing the funding application.
Deputy Reeve Bill King said corporate partnerships could also be considered to cover some of the townships end.
Councillor Marina Summers said there’s no harm in applying for this funding and if they’re successful, they can still decide not to pursue the renovations if they decide it’s not feasible.
