Mississippi Mills council has referred a section of their newly amended building bylaw back to staff for a revision. At the heart of council’s opposition to the regulations was a fee schedule that priced permits for renovations and repairs at 2% of the value of the construction set by Town staff.
Councillor Jane Torrance found those fees inherently unfair.
The revisions of the bylaw did include a construction value dispute mechanism, but some councillors found the proposed process cumbersome and expensive for the applicant.
Torrance wondered if the new regulations and fee costs would cause homeowners to simply avoid dealing with building staff altogether.
In the end, council voted to remove the dispute process and send it back to staff for revision for future discussion and possible approval.
