The OPP is warning us about deceptive phone calls designed to trick them into sharing personal details or making fraudulent payments.
Callers use spoofing technology to manipulate caller ID, making it appear as if a local number, business, or government agency is calling.
Common tactics include altering the number to match a local area code, mirroring the recipient’s phone number, or impersonating trusted organizations like financial institutions or police services.
To protect themselves, residents are advised not to trust caller ID, let unknown calls go to voicemail, and never provide personal or financial information. If unsure, hang up and call the organization directly. Suspicious calls should be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or online.
