The Rideau Valley Conservation Foundation (RVCF) is stepping up to protect endangered bats, thanks to a generous grant from TC Energy’s Build Strong program.
The funding will allow the Foundation to buy high-tech acoustic recording units and Echo Meters to monitor at-risk bat species on conservation lands.
The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) documented five endangered bat species in 2024, including the Little Brown Bat and Tri-colored Bat.
Beginning this spring, staff will deploy monitoring equipment on 10 sites to learn where bats are roosting and hibernating. This data will help guide conservation work and create better habitats.
White Nose Syndrome has devastated bat populations across North America. RVCF and RVCA hope this new program will improve long-term survival rates.
“This is about protecting a vital part of our ecosystem,” said technician Adrienne Lewis.
