A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for Smiths Falls, Perth and Eastern Lanark County as dangerous storms are expected this afternoon.
Environment Canada says a cold front will trigger strong thunderstorms between early afternoon and early evening. The storms could bring wind gusts up to 110 km/h, hail as large as 4 cm, and a risk of a tornado.
Officials warn the weather could cause serious damage. Large hail can harm people and destroy property. Strong winds can break trees, damage homes and even blow large vehicles off the road.
Residents are urged to take cover if threatening weather approaches.
People should stay indoors and avoid travel if possible. Keep emergency kits ready and stay tuned to local weather alerts.
The watch may be upgraded as conditions develop.
