The Co-Founder of Secondhand Stories Chicken Sanctuary is upset with Smiths Falls council’s decision to greenlight a one-year backyard hen pilot project.
The non-profit takes on abandoned chickens in Rideau Lakes and the surrounding area.
But as Liz Wheeler tell myFM they’re at full capacity, and thinks this is a death sentence to some birds.
She says they currently house 20 chickens and two roosters. Each with their own personality, Wheeler said they can’t group them all together because there could be fights.
Wheeler claims the by-law is one of the worst she’s seen in towns that allow backyard hens.
Because of that, Wheeler says their organization will be pursuing legal action through the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks.
Wheeler spoke to myFM last month and dove further into the concerns their organization has with the by-law.
