An idea for a creation of a Misi Zibi Mamidosewin or Mississippi River Gathering Place came from Maureen Bostock of the Lanark County Neighbours for Truth and Reconciliation. It will be an installation of stone pillars and a descriptive plaque at Riverside Park in Carleton Place. One of the organizers Doreen Gray explains.
Along with the plaque, which will indicate historic indigenous settlements and special locations along the river, will be a hand-carved bench made out of a century-old willow which fell in the park. Doreen describes the center pieces of the installation.
Along with the animals depicted on the stone pillars will be two paddles. Doreen explains the symbolism of those paddles.
It’s the hope of the organizers that this will provide an unique reflection space for visitors to learn about those who lived and thrived in the region long ago, along with an appropriate ceremonial site. Fundraising for the work will begin shortly with plans to have the installation completed by September 30th.
