Arklan Public School in Carleton Place has won the 2024–25 Ted Kennedy Legacy Award for raising the most money per student in support of the Terry Fox Foundation.
The school raised a record-breaking $11,704—well above their $8,000 goal. It’s the first time Arklan PS has won the award since it was first awarded in 2011.
This year’s fundraising was personal. Students were inspired by Sam Rudge, a UCDSB student and daughter of Arklan’s vice-principal, Sarah Rudge. Sam is bravely battling osteosarcoma, the same cancer Terry Fox had.
Grade 4 student Shaye Mcnulty led the way by raising more than $3,000. “It feels really good because we’re influencing little kids and helping people when they’re sick,” she said.
Vice-principal Rudge said the community’s support was “overwhelming” and hopes to top this year’s total in 2025.
Arklan’s efforts helped push the school board’s total to $139,120.61 this year, bringing its lifetime fundraising past $2 million
