Smiths Falls Police are warning the public about a rise in the “Grandparent Scam” in the area. Fraudsters are calling seniors pretending to be family members in trouble or police officers asking for bail money.
Police say if you get a call like this, hang up right away. Then, call the person directly using a number you already know—not one the caller gives you.
If someone claims to be police, hang up and contact your local police using a verified number.
The scammers often create fake emergencies and pressure victims to send money quickly, sometimes asking for cash or cryptocurrency.
Police say the Canadian justice system does not accept bail through either method.
Smiths Falls Police are urging residents to talk to their family members about this scam and stay cautious.
