At Mississippi Mills’ recent council meeting, Rick Scholes Manager of the Fred Lossing Observatory, made a presentation and plea for the municipality to improve their bylaws to reduce the impact of road, commercial, and residential lighting on night skies. The Mills was one of the first communities to enact a bylaw to regulate exterior lighting and reduce light pollution in 2003.
Despite this, Scholes says the problem is getting worse.
Scholes points to two areas as the main causes for night sky pollution.
The municipality had reviewed and revised their light bylaw in March of this year, but those amendments only involved street lighting.
Scholes said he would review those changes and report back.
