The South East Health Unit is reminding residents about food safety when barbequing outdoors.
Dr. Linna Li, Deputy Medical Officer of Health, says undercooked meats can cause serious food poisoning.
She also says make sure you know how to properly store all food.
Bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli may lead to stomach illness if food is not handled properly.
Sarah Burris, Senior Public Health Inspector, highlights four key steps: Separate, Clean, Cook, and Chill. Keep raw meats away from ready-to-eat foods to avoid cross-contamination.
She says being safe can involve simple steps.
Use separate utensils and plates for raw and cooked meats. Wash hands and clean surfaces often, especially when handling different foods.
Cooking meat thoroughly is vital. Burris says use a thermometer to ensure safe temperatures
They also note that you should store leftovers quickly in coolers or refrigerators at 4°C or below.
