Mississippi Mills is projected to have a 37 hectare land deficit by 2051 according to a recent study.
The report recommends they explore a boundary expansion, but Mayor Christa Lowry said right now that’s off the table as there’s other options.
While not disputing the figures, which projects a population of 25,820 by 2051, Lowry said the report fails to address the infrastructure challenges they currently face, mainly around the strain on its wastewater plant.
Lowry also took issue with some of the report’s wording, calling it “strong,” on numerous occasions and making their current situation sound worse than it is, saying their not in a “must act now,” situation.
In addition she said a boundary expansion puts them in a tough spot, having just recently completed one.
70% of the expected housing growth in Mississippi Mills will be in and around Almonte, with the municipality as a whole expected to make up 28% of Lanark County’s entire population growth over that time frame.
