The Ontario Provincial Police are focusing on commercial vehicle safety this week as part of Operation Safe Driver Week, running until Saturday across the province.
Working with the Ministry of Transportation and other partners, the OPP is targeting unsafe driving behaviours involving transport trucks and passenger vehicles alike.
OPP Spokesperson Bill Dickson tells us among the targets are speeders.
Led by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, the annual campaign aims to reduce crashes and improve driver habits through education and enforcement.
Police say they’ll be watching for unsafe lane changes, tailgating, speeding and aggressive driving. Dickson says all are preventable.
Officers will also be checking commercial drivers for proper vehicle inspections, hours of service, secured cargo and dangerous goods handling.
The OPP says commercial drivers must follow safety rules 24/7 and that sharing the road responsibly is a duty shared by all drivers.
