A public meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, September 11th at the McDonalds Corners Agricultural Hall to address the proposed sand extraction pit in Lanark Highlands.
The project, which would supply material to Cavanagh Construction, has generated ongoing concern from residents and environmental advocates.
Its proximity to a local business and large tourism draw, Wheelers’ Pancake House, as well as the potential impact to wildlife in and around Barbers Lake has struck a chord with many in the community.
The opposition has led to the formation of a grassroots organization, Friends of Lanark Highlands, dedicated to protecting the area from what they see as harmful industrial development.
It’s the first significant public discussion of the plan in nearly two years. This meeting was scheduled for earlier this summer but was postponed.
