At Perth council’s recent meeting, changes were made to the Town’s garbage bag limits that were approved by the committee of the whole one week earlier.
A by-law is not official until it is approved by the majority of council.
A vote during a committee of the whole meeting determines whether or not to move the item to a future council meeting to be voted on again, where it will either be approved or defeated.
The committee originally approved putting a one-bag limit on households, but council increased that number to two.
It stemmed from a proposal to eliminate the need to put tags on each bag.
Town Director Grant Machan explains.
Machan notes that the size and weight limit in place is rather generous and permits garbage cans as well as bags.
Machan stated the aim of garbage limits and the green bin programs is to extend the life of the Town-owned landfill site, which is approaching its limit.
Perth is the only municipality in Lanark County to include a green-bin organic waste program and Machan notes its usage hasn’t increased with population growth.
One of the other changes council implemented was a reduction in the price of tags from $3.30 to $2.00.
Tags are still permitted if a household needs extra volume due to special demands. If anyone misses a bi-weekly pick-up they can take their waste directly to the Town’s landfill on Wildlife Road during operating hours at no cost if the bags are tagged.
