The Town of Smiths Falls has temporarily closed the Memorial Community Centre arena, including the concourse, after an unusual accident caused water damage during play on Thursday afternoon.
Officials say the incident happened when a puck deflected off the crossbar of the net and struck a ceiling-mounted sprinkler head. The impact triggered the fire suppression system, sending water onto the ice and into the facility.
No one was injured, but the arena had to be shut down while staff began emergency cleanup and repairs.
“The closure is required while our staff conduct cleanup and emergency repairs,” said Stephanie Clark, Director of Community Services. She added that the town will share updates with the community once a reopening timeline is confirmed.
The Town of Smiths Falls is thanking residents and user groups for their patience and understanding as repairs move forward.
