Today marks a tragic anniversary.
It was 10 years ago on September 22nd, 2015 that Carol Culleton, Anastasia Kuzyk and Nathalie Warmerdam were murdered by a man who was a former partner to each, who was known to be violent.
The triple femicide spurred an inquest into ending Intimate Partner Violence in Ontario that delivered 86 recommendations to all levels of governments and stakeholders.
Pamela Cross is a Feminist Lawyer and Women’s Advocate who took part in that inquest.
She says it’s hard to believe ten years have passed, and notes accountability is a key to making progress in the elimination of IPV.
Cross says she’d like to see the commission in place by the 15th anniversary.
The first recommendation was to declare IPV an epidemic. While more than 90 municipalities in Ontario have done so, the provincial government has not. That motion was hung up in committee after being moved by the opposition NDP.
Lanark County Interval House Executive Director Erin Lee also testified before the inquest. Lee agrees that accountability and experience plays a big role in finding solutions.
All involved agree that communication and coordination is also needed between the many stakeholders involved in IPV cases.
That particular aspect is being examined, and changes made. But advocates say even though it will take time, progress is being made.
If you or anyone you know is in a dangerous situation with your partner, call 9-1-1 if it is safe to do so.
