The Smiths Falls Fire Department is reminding residents that being prepared for a fire can start with a simple step—pressing the test button on a smoke alarm.
September 28th is “Test your Smoke Alarm Day.”
Smiths Falls Fire Prevention Officer Jason Smith says testing ensures the alarm is working and saves lives in an emergency.
Smith say to further raise awareness, the Smiths Falls Fire Department is launching a community challenge on September 28th, that’s all about getting kids involved in the process.
Fire officials say smoke alarms should be tested at least once a month, batteries should be refreshed every year, and alarms older than 10 years should be replaced.
The department hopes the day will encourage everyone to take fire safety seriously and practice a home fire escape plan.
