
Larry McDermott said there’s been lots of progress made around educating the public of Indigenous history in recent years.
Specifically, the Executive Director of Plenty Canada referenced Indigenous study efforts by the Upper Canada District School Board.
McDermott sits on the board’s advisory committee, which recently set aside funding for Indigenous readings.
He said addressing the “gap,” in the population of Indigenous learnings remains the biggest challenge.
While efforts have greatly improved in recent years that’ll lead to better educated future generations, that leaves the majority of adults with much to learn as their shared history wasn’t taught growing up.
McDermott said that leads to stereotypes.
McDermott said Indigenous groups were wronged when colonial migrants reneged on treaties they agreed on with First Nations after arriving in Canada.
