Community Housing Initiative Perth or CHIP has begun construction of a 15 unit affordable-rent apartment building on Halton Street in the Perthworks neighbourhood.
After four years of planning, backhoes and bulldozers are now on site working on the foundation of the new building. Pending final permits, it’s hoped that the exterior shell will be completed before winter weather arrives with plans to welcome tenants next year.
Over 400 households in Lanark County are on a waiting list for affordable housing. The apartment building, being constructed by the Saumure Group at 63 Halton Street, will have 11 one-bedroom units and four two-bedrooms.
The project has received over $2.5 million of the $4.4 million total cost in funding through the County. The Town of Perth donated the land, valued at $190,000 early on in the proposal stages.
CHIP is on the final drive of their fundraising for the project with just over $200K left to go. Find out how you can help at perthhousing.ca
