Perth Polar Bear Plunge makes waves with founder’s return and call for volunteers
The 32nd annual Perth Polar Bear Plunge is set to make a splash on January 1, 2026, and organizers are calling on volunteers to help make the beloved New Year’s Day tradition a success.
This year’s plunge carries extra meaning as event founder Dave Lavery returns to take the icy dip.
A longtime Perth Legion member, Lavery was held captive by the Taliban last year and vowed upon his release that he’d be back to plunge again.
Lavery says he’ll be proud to take the plunge for the 2026 recipient, the Royal Canadian Legion, Perth-Upon-Tay Branch 244.
Lavery says volunteers are needed to assist on plunge day and with advance preparations.
Lavery says those interested can call the Legion at 613-267-4400 or stop by at 26 Beckwith Street East in Perth.
The event, founded in 1994, has raised more than $510,000 for local causes.
