Firefighters are breathing a sigh of relief after heavy rain overnight helped slow a wildfire burning along Road 509 between Ompah and Mississippi Station.
Ontario Provincial Police say there have been no reports of injuries or serious damage, though several residents were forced to evacuate as a precaution. Crews from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry are back in the area this morning assessing hot spots and containment progress.
Frontenac OPP members assisted with evacuations, with one officer capturing dramatic photos of the fire before the rain arrived.
Road 509 remains closed from South Lavant Road in Ompah to the Elphin-Maberly Road and Frontenac Road 509 intersection in Snow Road Station. Officials say no additional evacuations are expected at this time.
