The Ontario government is investing $240,000 over two years to support the Mobile Crisis Response Team (MCRT) led by the Smiths Falls Police Service. The funding will help police work alongside trained crisis workers to assist people facing mental health challenges.
MPP John Jordan said the funding is “vital to supporting residents in mental distress,” adding that collaboration with the Lanark County OPP allows for faster, more effective responses.
Solicitor General Michael Kerzner said the province is “equipping police with the tools, resources, and partnerships they need” to keep communities safe.
Smiths Falls Police Chief Jodi Empey said the team—made up of nurses, social workers, and a caseworker—has been invaluable, helping officers de-escalate situations and connect people to care.
Across Ontario, 36 police services and OPP detachments will share about $9 million through the grant to strengthen crisis response and community safety.
