Smiths Falls Police Services has an agreement with the Brockville Police Service for a back-up NG911 system.
Chief Jodi Empey explains why the move was made.
NG911, or Next Generation 911, is an Internet Protocol based emergency communications system designed to replace the traditional analog 911 infrastructure.
Chief Empey says that she reached out to Brockville Police and signed a Memo of Understanding. The system would be activated in the event of an event like a prolonged power outage.
NG911 allows public safety telecommunicators to share multimedia and other types of data with responders, enhancing situational awareness and improving public access to emergency services.
Empey says having a proper backup in place is vital.
The NG911 system aims to facilitate seamless communication between citizens, dispatchers, and first responders, ultimately modernizing emergency response capabilities.
