An arrest has been made in connection with the 2023 homicide of Elizabethtown-Kitley resident, 66-year-old Giles Dagenais.
On July 31, 2023, shortly after 7 a.m., officers from the Leeds County OPP responded to a home in the Toledo area, where Dagenais was found deceased. Following a lengthy and complex investigation, police have now charged 58-year-old Ronald Gough of Smiths Falls with first-degree murder under Section 231 of the Criminal Code.
Gough was arrested on November 6, 2025, and remanded in custody after a bail hearing. He is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brockville on November 25.
The investigation is being led by the Leeds County OPP Crime Unit, with direction from the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch. They are working in collaboration with the Smiths Falls Police Service, the Office of the Chief Coroner, and the Forensic Pathology Service.
Detective Inspector Jocelyn Sauve praised the team’s determination, saying their tireless efforts brought clarity to a case that deeply affected the community.
