The first Veterans Memorial Crosswalk in Smiths Falls is now complete at the corner of Beckwith and Main streets — just in time for this year’s Remembrance Day parade.
Smiths Falls Legion Public Relations Officer Ken Manwell, Manwell says he’s deeply moved to see the vision come to life, especially knowing it will be part of the parade route to the cenotaph on November 11.
The project, led by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 95 honours local veterans and took more than a year to plan.
The Town of Smiths Falls also played a big role in making it happen. Manwell says Town staff hand-painted the design in what was an incredible effort.
A second crosswalk is planned for Market and Main streets in the spring, when temperatures allow for proper installation.
The bilingual design includes maple leaves and “Lest We Forget” written in both English and French — a lasting symbol of respect and remembrance in downtown Smiths Falls.
