Experts urge residents to test their homes during Radon Action Month
Southeast Public Health is reminding residents that November is Radon Action Month — a time to learn about the dangers of radon and take steps to test and reduce exposure in their homes.
Dr. Ethan Toumishey, Deputy Medical Officer of Health, explained that radon is a naturally occurring, colourless, odourless, and tasteless radioactive gas.
The doctor adds that it is found in foundations across Ontario including in our listening area. He says the main concern is when the gas makes it way into other parts of the home.
Toumishey says it can have deadly side effects.
Senior Public Health Inspector Joyce MacNeil encouraged residents to test their homes using long-term kits available through hardware stores or at takeactiononradon.ca.
If results show high radon levels, homeowners should consult a certified mitigation professional. More information is available through local public health websites and Health Canada.
