The Royal Canadian Legion remains a cornerstone of community life in towns like Perth and Smiths Falls. Now with Remembrance Day behind us, our local branches are encouraging more people to join.
Perth Legion member Dave Lavery says the organization has evolved far beyond its military roots.
Smiths Falls Legion member Ken Manwell, a 50-year member and public relations officer, says membership has dropped from as many as 700 to about 225.
Lavery says the Legion works very hard to become a part of the community.
Beyond supporting veterans, Manwell says local legions donate annually to community groups including Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Lanark Animal Welfare Society, and local food banks.
Both Lavery and Manwell agree — joining the Legion means giving back to the community while preserving an important tradition.
