Southeast Public Health is urging residents to follow simple food-safety steps this holiday season to avoid getting friends and family sick.
Deputy Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ethan Toumishey says holiday meals often involve higher-risk foods.
The Doctor says cross-contamination is one of the biggest risks.
Toumishey reminds people to wash hands before preparing food and after handling raw meat.
Cooking temperatures are critical. He says using a probe thermometer is the safest way to confirm foods are cooked properly.
Toumishey also stresses chilling leftovers quickly and staying home if sick to prevent spreading viruses during holiday meals.
