Lanark OPP is urging Smiths Falls residents to stay alert after a reported cougar sighting on Poonamalie Sideroad.
Police say anyone outdoors — especially those with small children or pets — should take extra care until the animal’s movements are better understood. Officers have contacted the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, which is now monitoring the situation.
Officials say cougars are rarely seen in the region, but residents should give wildlife plenty of space. People are asked not to approach the animal, not to try to photograph it up close, and to avoid leaving food or garbage outside that could attract predators.
Lanark OPP says the warning is precautionary, and no injuries have been reported. The public is encouraged to stay aware of their surroundings, supervise children and pets, and report any sightings immediately.
Anyone facing an emergency should call 9-1-1 or the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
