Smiths Falls Police say a routine traffic stop in the downtown core quickly turned into a weapons investigation after an officer discovered a firearm and ammunition inside a vehicle on November 25th.
Police say the items were stored carelessly, prompting an immediate arrest at the scene.
Officers seized the firearm and ammunition as evidence, and the driver — 23-year-old Bradley Jessup of Merrickville — now faces several charges. Jessup is charged with two counts of careless use of a firearm and ammunition, along with one count of failing to surrender authorization. Police say he was also issued multiple provincial offence notices under the Highway Traffic Act.
Jessup was later released on an undertaking with conditions and a scheduled court date.
Police say proactive patrols remain a key part of keeping illegal or unsafe firearms off local streets, and they continue to encourage residents to report suspicious activity.
