Ontario Provincial Police are urging residents to stay off frozen lakes and rivers as winter conditions take hold, saying early-season ice is dangerously thin and unpredictable.
Officers are reminding the public that “no ice is safe ice,” and even a brief fall through can lead to life-threatening cold-water immersion.
The OPP says people who take unnecessary risks not only endanger themselves but also put first responders in danger during rescue efforts. Snowmobilers are being asked to use designated trails, avoid unfamiliar areas at night, and check weather and trail conditions before heading out.
Riders should wear proper clothing, carry safety gear such as ice picks and throw ropes, and travel with others. Police also recommend keeping a fully charged phone and downloading the what3words app to help emergency crews locate riders in distress.
Officers say drivers should never use alcohol or drugs, and should regularly inspect their machines before riding. Anyone who sees someone fall through the ice should call 911 immediately and avoid attempting a rescue without proper training or equipment.
For non-emergency matters, the OPP can be reached at 1-888-310-1122.
