Smiths Falls Fire Prevention Officer Jason Smith is urging residents to slow down in the kitchen this holiday season, saying Christmas cooking remains one of the leading causes of home fires.
Smith says many families prepare bigger meals than usual, often with helpers in the kitchen and plenty of distractions. He says that’s when things can go wrong quickly.
Smith also suggests using a timer for turkeys and side dishes, and keeping flammable items like oven mitts, towels and plastic utensils away from active burners.
He says residents should also keep a tight-fitting lid nearby. If a pot catches fire, placing a lid on top can smother the flames within seconds. Families with young children should be extra careful to keep little hands away from hot surfaces.
Smith says simple habits can prevent life-changing emergencies.
The Smiths Falls Fire Department says holiday cooking safety is essential as people gather, visit and prepare meals, reminding residents that prevention is the best gift they can give their families this season.
