Emergency officials are reminding residents not to forget their pets when preparing an emergency kit.
A basic pet emergency kit should include several days’ worth of food and potable water, along with bowls, paper towels, and a manual can opener. Owners are also encouraged to pack a blanket, a small toy, and a sturdy leash or harness.
Other important items include a pet carrier, medications, vaccination records, and a current photo of your pet in case they become lost. Cat owners should include litter, a pan, and plastic bags if required.
Pet owners should also keep information on feeding schedules, medical or behavioural needs, and ensure their pet has an up-to-date ID tag with a phone number and veterinarian contact. Copies of licences and muzzles should be included where required.
Emergency planners say being prepared helps keep both people and pets safe during unexpected situations.
