Homes are filled with lights, guests and festive decorations, that has local fire officials are urging residents to slow down and think safety first this holiday season.
Perth Fire Services Fire Chief Trevor Choffe and Carleton Place Fire Department Associate Fire Chief Matt Anderson spoke with LanarkLeedsToday.ca about the most common fire risks they see at this time of year.
Choffe said live Christmas trees remain a major concern if they are not properly maintained.
Anderson said candles and social gatherings can also be a dangerous mix.
Electrical decorations are another risk, especially when cords are damaged or overloaded.
Anderson stressed the importance of working smoke alarms, particularly with overnight guests.
Choffe also reminded residents that new carbon monoxide alarm rules take effect Jan. 1, requiring alarms on every level of the home.
Fire officials say a little planning can help ensure the holidays stay safe — and memorable for the right reasons.
