The founder of the Perth Polar Bear Plunge says this year’s event was everything he hoped for and more, as jumpers helped raise more than $30,000 for The Perth Branch of the Canadian Legion, celebrating its 100th year.
Dave Lavery was back on the ice after missing last year’s plunge. Lavery spent 77 days held captive by the Taliban in Afghanistan, making this return especially meaningful.

The Perth Polar Bear Plunge drew an estimated 80 to 100 jumpers, with strong community support despite cold conditions. Lavery said being on the ice gave him a special view of the crowd.

Lavery says that the anticipation of being back in Perth for the plunge has been a strong motivator in recent months.
Organizers also announced next year’s beneficiary will be Project Trauma Support, which helps members of the armed forces and first responders cope with mental health challenges.
