Ontario Provincial Police say members of the Leeds County Detachment were called to a former shelter on Oxford Avenue shortly after 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, after a resident reported seeing someone enter the building through a window.
Leeds OPP officers, assisted by members of the Brockville Police Service, surrounded the building and conducted a search with help from the OPP Canine Unit.
Police say an individual was located inside and taken into custody. A large amount of property that had been moved to a doorway was also found.
Jayce Matthews, 34, of Brockville, has been charged with break and enter with intent to commit an indictable offence, and mischief for destroying or damaging property.
The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brockville
