The Smiths Falls Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion has started the new year by giving back in a big way.
During its New Year’s Day celebration, the Legion announced $41,000 in donations to 22 local schools, charities, and community groups across Smiths Falls and the surrounding area.
Several local schools received $500 each to support student meal programs, helping ensure children have access to nutritious food during the school day.
Community organizations also benefited, including the Lanark Animal Welfare Society, local youth programs, arts and culture groups, and service organizations. Larger donations went to groups providing critical support, such as Lanark County Interval House, the Smiths Falls Food Bank, and the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital Foundation’s MRI Fund.
Legion officials say the donations reflect ongoing community needs and were reviewed and adjusted from last year’s list.
The Legion thanked its members and supporters, noting the funds come from year-round fundraising efforts and community support.
