Two Smiths Falls councillors have been suspended after a hot mic incident first reported by LanarkLeedsToday.ca.
Council voted to suspend Coun. Jay Brennan for 45 days and Coun. Steve Robinson for 15 days. Both suspensions are with pay.
The decision was announced by Coun. Peter McKenna during the Jan. 12 committee of the whole meeting.
McKenna said council reviewed a recording from the Jan. 5 meeting and determined both councillors breached the town’s code of conduct.
Council concluded the breach was serious and noted neither councillor disputed the finding.
McKenna says Council accepted Brennan’s apology and said the matter was taken seriously.
Brennan later addressed council, apologizing for his actions.
Mayor Shawn Pankow said council acted within its authority under the code of conduct.
The referenced portion of the Jan. 5 meeting video has since been removed from the town’s YouTube channel.
