The Town of Perth is participating as a community partner in the Tay Basin – Perth Landscape Ideas Competition, a student design competition being delivered through the University of Toronto. The competition is led locally by architect Adam Mackenzie Smith, with involvement from the Town of Perth.
Adam speaks of the significance of the Basin.
With the Town repaving the Basin’s parking area, and Toby Shannan proposing to reconstruct the Town’s first home, the Red House on site, Adam says holding a design competition for the landscaping is a great way to envision how the space could function as a flexible, accessible, and community-focused public square while accommodating existing municipal infrastructure, parking, events, and pedestrian movement.
There will be no cost to the Town for the competition and staff reports it represents a high-value opportunity to engage with post-secondary students and support creative exploration of this public space. While the Town cannot formally adopt any competition outcomes, the work may produce useful inspiration and insight on future Basin plans.
