The Smiths Falls Fire Department is reminding residents that working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are required by law, and that some homes are still falling short.
Fire Prevention Officer Jason Smith says updated rules took effect January 1, requiring carbon monoxide detectors on every level of a home, along with smoke alarms. He says combo units are an easy way to meet both rules.
Smith says firefighters have already found homes in Smiths Falls missing one or more alarms during recent visits.
He notes the department does have the authority to issue steep fines under the Ontario Fire Code, but enforcement is not the goal.
Smith says alarms are affordable, widely available, and can save lives. He encourages residents in Smiths Falls and beyond to check, update, and test alarms regularly.
