Perth Councillor David Bird says the town is facing a major infrastructure deficit, and they’re trying to find ways to stop the bleeding.
Bird knows they’re not the only municipality in this situation but says they’re closer to trouble as the town’s limited in growth potential.
He also pointed to local governments from more recent to decades ago not needing to think years ahead as funding was always available, which he feels led the town to its financial position today.
Bird says the province is downloading more responsibility to municipal governments but at the same time, reducing their authority, using hospitals – where the province pays for the building, but municipalities pay for the equipment – as an example.
Bird says they’re staring down a infrastructure deficit with growing costs and a dwindling amount of funding available.
