During winter storms, neighbours across Lanark County are being encouraged to take small steps that can make a big difference for older residents who may feel isolated or unsafe.
Maureen Crook, program coordinator and acting executive director with PEP Therapeutic Services in Perth, says simple visits can help seniors feel protected and connected when bad weather keeps them indoors.
Crook says a short conversation, a smile, or a quick check-in can remind someone that they matter and that help is close by during difficult winter days.
She also says practical help is just as important, especially after heavy snowfall.
Crook says neighbours can also help by removing heavy snow from the tops and windows of cars for seniors who may struggle to do it safely.
She says these small acts of kindness can prevent injuries, reduce stress and create neighbourhood connections.
Crook encourages residents to knock on a door, offer help, and take a few minutes to visit.
She says checking in helps seniors stay safe and reminds them they are not alone in the community.
