Smiths Falls council committee received details on the cost of a complete design for a new public works building. Last year the Town received an insurance payout of $1.288 M after a fire severely damaged the structure. A contract was awarded to IDEA Inc for a 30% design.
Town director Paul McMunn reported that the company was willing to move forward with a complete design, costing, tender preparation, and construction supervision. He explained how their fee was fluid depending on final pricing.
The industry average for such design and prep work is usually around 6% of total costs. The proposal will see the new structure built at the corner of Air Care and Walker Roads, fronting onto Walker. McMunn explained how the $10.4 M project would be funded.
McMunn was confident that with adjustments the final cost of the project would come in under $10M with plans to begin this spring.
