At a committee meeting of Rideau Lakes council, a motion to deny support for a high-speed rail line by Alto was debated. Alto, the Crown corporation is planning such a line between Quebec City and Toronto.
They have proposed a route that could pass through the Township.
Because of limited information and consultation, and to protect the Township’s rural character, agricultural land, and environmentally sensitive areas, Council made it clear in a unanimous vote that they do not support this southern route.
Council instead supports locating the corridor and a station within the City of Kingston and has directed staff to arrange a public information session with Alto representatives for local residents.
Staff was directed to forward the motion to federal and provincial authorities, Alto, and the local MP and MPP.
