The Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority is seeking volunteer citizen scientists to help collect winter ice data across lakes in the Mississippi Valley watershed.
Volunteers will record key ice phenology dates — including ice-on, freeze-up, break-up, and ice-off — using simple visual observations. The information will support MVCA’s flood forecasting and warning program and contribute to research examining how changing ice conditions linked to climate change affect water quality and quantity.
The authority says the program requires only a few hours of time spread over the winter season and is ideal for lake residents with waterfront property or regular access to a lake.
